Marketing is not advertising and selling

This post was inspired by Techcrunch reporting VC Fred Wilson's odd thoughts about marketing: "Marketing is for companies who have sucky products. -- And you won't have to do much marketing, at least at the start." This sounds like the usual nonsense people think about marketing. The nonsense that it's all about advertising and selling. That it's all about hiring a marketing company to create a campaign. Advertising and selling are marketing, but marketing is not advertising and selling. Not solely. Marketing is something much much more: "Marketing is the activity, set of institutions...

Tea story

In late 90's I spent a week in Germany. Due to some delays with our flights, we got there pretty late. Before our arrival to the destination I had always put milk into my tea. That night I was too tired to find out which container was filled with milk, so I just drank my tea black. During the week I consumed a lot of that tea. When my friend went to get herself a cup of coffee and me a cup of tea, she sometimes forgot which was which. That strong it was, black as coffee. After the week I was a bit addicted to this tea. Caffeine, I know. Ever since I've been looking for that tea, cause it was...

Self branding is challenging

Self branding is challenging. Especially it's challenging to someone who has always been taught to be humble and not make too much noise about herself. And it's very challenging in a culture where self promotion is considered as nothing but egoistic. However self branding is needed in many situations: Finding a job, starting a (small) company, promoting a blog or a Twitter feed, getting traffic and faves and comments for Flickr photos, and so forth. What makes it challenging is the fact that branding is much about claiming a territory. Self branding is about saying "this is what I do an...

It's tricky

I like the word tricky. Maybe I don't like using it, but I like it when someone else says it. Especially when they use it for answering a (pun intended) tricky question. Just to fill in the gap and not having to say something like "I don't know". You know, using the word with a high-pitched tone. The "tri" higher and then letting the voice go down to "cky". "Well... It's tricky..." Stretching the words and hanging there to collect their minds. For some reason I like it.

Old friends

When I was a kid I had this friend. We were good friends, playing together and visiting each other. Sometimes we read the same books, sometimes we watched the movies based on the books we had read. Like Gone with the Wind or Jurassic Park. Her home was by a lake, so when I was visiting her during summer, we usually went swimming at some point. Then came the teenage and we sort of grew apart. The last time we spoke was sometime in mid 90's. The last time we saw was most likely Spring 1997 or something like that. A couple of years ago Facebook became popular here in Finland. At some poin...

Like something's wrong

All these buttons are giving me white hair. First the different tweet buttons and now Facebook Like. It used to be all fine, but all of a sudden a couple of days ago all the Like buttons started to show a count of 8 likes. All. Of. Them. Including the count on all the new blog posts, immediately after being released. Today the count had climbed up to 9, which had happened as someone had actually tried to like one of my posts. Unfortunately this person (who happens to be my friend, including on Facebook) ended up liking my whole site instead of one of the posts. Well, that's not unfortun...
