The difficulty of letting go

Lately we've been getting rid of old and excess stuff. Like those age old t-shirts, which I've kept "just in case". Or piles of papers, some computer science prints and such. And even books. That's the most difficult thing for me: Letting go of books. Even the ones I never read. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Clothes, furniture and prints are much easier. With books it feels like getting rid of a family member. It's not that we just throw the old stuffs away. If they are good and recyclable they go to the local reuse centre or library or something. Seeing how much stuff we have h...

Social media tip 6: Live and let live

Especially if you use social media in personal capacity and don't necessarily present a company (owned by someone else) or another person, it's up to you what you want to do. Write about things you like. Use Twitter against the "rules". It's your blog, or your Twitter feed or your Facebook wall. It adds tons of personality to your social media presence. It's easier for others to trust you if you are who you are and do what you do and don't try and pretend to be someone else. Doing as you like is unfortunately difficult. You are likely to get concerned how people around you feel about it....

Social media tip 5: Shorten it down

If you write a long post on your blog the readers are likely to skim it through. Actually, if you write a short post they are still likely to skim. In order to get your message out there, keep it short and use clear and simple language. The social media users don't have time in decrypting difficult words and hidden meanings. Social media tip 3: Don't follow the rules

The so called social media experts keep telling us how to tweet, how to use Facebook, how to blog and so forth. Some of these "rules" are good and it's a great idea to check them out. But since you are being smart you can as well toss the rules after reading them through. If they tell you to "tweet interesting and useful links", tweet instead about how cool your office is even in this hot weather. Or maybe you can take a photo of the view from the window right there and share it with the rest of us. Obviously tossing the rules doesn't mean you should never ever keep them in mind. Take...

Social media tip 2: Be smart

Transparency and being personal are the ways in social media. However it doesn't mean you have to share every dirty details of your employees or your medical conditions with everyone. Being transparent and personal requires also being smart. Thinking it through before posting it. Taking a breathe and deciding whether it's a good idea or not.

Social Media Tip 1: Spice it up!

Doesn't it get boring when certain people share same stuff all over and over again? As the oldtimer who tells the same old story every time, until the audience barely listens him. In order to wake the audience up and get their attention the oldtimer should add something new to the story. Or shake them by telling a whole new tale. If you are a "social media guru" don't just keep tweeting those same social media links as everyone else. Add some taste to your plain feed with a link to that funky Wonder woman notebook on Etsy. Maybe your company is one of the biggest mobile phone creators...
