Depressing advertising
There's a big advertising campaign of some religious group going on around Helsinki. The ads are very vague. They don't tell what they are exactly about. I wouldn't know they are about a religious group unless someone had told me so. Well, of course I could guess it too. Each ad features a photo of some person and (supposedly) a quote by that person. The quote is about how their life used to suck but now it's all better and sun is shining since... Well, there's a hint of brain washing there. Looks like one of these people has had some sort of a eating problem, a couple has been on a verge of...
Hot Font #1: Lato
Here we go with a new series called Hot Fonts. The series will be published once in a while and will feature fonts I like. The first Hot Font is my current favorite, Lato. Lato is a clear and simple, yet beautiful sans-serif and includes 10 styles, from hairline to black, non-italic and italic. Lato means summer in Polish and a barn in Finnish. Created by Ćukasz Dziedzic, the font is published under SIL Open Font License (OFL) and is free. Lato on Font Squirrel and Google Web Fonts.
Generations
In the store a girl tells her friends how she's going to get tax refunds for over 800 euros. She sees a pack of condoms accompanied with a small tube of lube and asks: "What's that?" Her friend seems unsure, but guesses it could be "some sort of lubricant liquid". At the bus stop an elderly woman smells faintly of pee and hums to herself. She decides to park herself right in front of me, as if she has the right to get to the bus first. Later in the bus the same elderly woman manages to pull my hair.
Social media tip 8: Give (something)
Using social media has a lot to do with sharing and giving. The idea is that us web users would give our contribution to this vast pile of everything. Therefore if you want to be a social media good guy, you will give. For free. Give information, give your knowledge, give advice (to those who ask for it), give ideas. Or give some or all of your Flickr photos to be used under Creative Commons licenses or give free brushes, patterns, printables, e-books and other stuff like that. Do you have a blog about design? Think about giveaways, gifts you will send to some lucky ones who have joine...
Some like it homespun
I like roaming around CSS galleries. And I do often like the stuff I see there. But sometimes a thought goes through my head: Why do all these sites look the same? Often these sites are built to look cool, but not to look like the organization and the people who form it. They are designed to be all hip and pop and in, but not personal and interesting. The hipster corporate style as I've called it before. A new client I talked with today said she doesn't want their site to look like it's been made just to look flashy by some third party. She said she wants the site to have that homemade f...
Social media tip 7: Don't force it
It may seem like social media is something everyone must jump into. Must, not may. Give it a try first. You may need a little kick and practice. However if something doesn't feel good for you, there's no point in it. If you force it, that will show. It will be uncomfortable for you as well as for everyone else too. Take a step back. Have a break. See what all of the others are doing. Play around, have fun.
Wash the windows
I believe there are some people who actually enjoy cleaning. I'm not amongst those people. Cleaning is messy (yes, indeed) and painful. Of all the messy business of cleaning I'd say washing windows is the most challenging. You know why? Cause I'm short and I have a fear of heights. I might have a slight case of vertigo too. I cannot climb on ladders higher than perhaps too steps. And I need to climb on something in order to reach the upper corners of the windows. Standing on a ladder in front of an open window at the third floor of a building doesn't seem very good idea for a small perso...
