Why I use email list double opt-in (and why you should too)
There are two very basic reasons why I use double opt-in. And why you should too. One is to protect the other people and the other one is to protect yourself. If you wish to join my email list you must, after filling the simple form on my site, activate your subscription. This is a common practice with email list subscriptions, known as double opt-in. Unlike in single opt-in, in double opt-in just filling the subscription form doesn't add you on an email list. Instead you must first confirm your email address, usually by clicking a special link in a confirmation/activation email. This ma...
What's wrong with simple advice?
I have noticed lots of people have to my blog searching for "my instagram is posting spam". They have been ending up to my post about getting rid of spam on Instagram. It's a collection of tips on how to avoid spam (as far as it can be) and how to report it. In the comment section some people have been asking me what to do when their accounts have been compromised. Their accounts were posting spammy images. Or their accounts are posting spam comments. Why is that happening and how to stop it? There are several things that may have happened. Either it's a case of old fashioned hacking. Pe...
Wake up
Surely she was awake. Her eyes were open, she could move her body. The room wasn't dark anymore, yet it wasn't really light either. Her heart was pounding and fear was rushing through her veins. The man next to her wasn't who he was supposed to be. She didn't know him. A stranger, sleeping soundly as if he had always slept there. She closed her eyes trying to grasp the reality. Surely she wasn't awake. This was a dream, something happening between the sleep and waking up. Breathe in counting five. Hold breath counting five. Breathe out counting five. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Calm down, i...
What is… Responsive Web Design
Responsive is a word you hear now pretty much every time someone talks about web design. Some people slightly mislabel it as mobile responsive. Either way, responsive websites are here and with the current technology they are the way to go. Responsive websites have been here for a long while, previously as fluid width designs. After the media queries were introduced in CSS3 around 2008/2009, the term Responsive Web Design (RWD) was coined. In basics, responsive websites respond to screen/browser size/resolution, and possibly screen orientation. So if you are accessing a responsive website wi...
This can't be changed later!
Yesterday I opened Pinterest and was greeted with a pop-up prompt asking if I was interested in advertising. Hey, I thought, they've finally rolled the advertising out to the rest of the world! Fat chance. I clicked on and in the next prompt I was asked to set my location. The location setting only offered United States (Dollars). For a moment I thought to choose that. I could, at least, see how the advertising platform works. But luckily I read the text again. What the...? I could rant about the fact that Pinterest was offering me, someone they know is from Finland, this advertising option....
10 questions to help you with personal branding
A personal brand is lot more than just your logo and website colour palette. It is what distinguishes you from others. Your brand can be seen as a promise. It builds from your personality, the emotions you evoke in others and the way you look. Your brand consists of your name, face, voice, way of talking, logo, colours and fonts, the way you write plus other features which define and differentiate you from others. Your brand also is built from the image and expectations your customers, blog readers, followers, competition, fans, haters and others have of you, your business and your products....
Forget SEO, concentrate on user experience
User experience, UX, is a hot topic these days. In a summarised definition, UX concerns the emotions and attitudes a person has about your website (or app or whatnot). As in a while ago search engine optimising was what everyone talked about, and before that it was all content marketing, now user experience is what makes the hearts fill with joy. Okay, admittedly I was being sarcastic there. However, laced with my sarcasm or not, user experience has became a huge deal and that's no wonder. Lots of experienced web folks are throwing SEO in the back seat, due to search engines becoming more and...
