Why I write
I have an urge to write. I just can't stop writing. If I'm not writing words on a device or a paper, I'm writing in my head. Not all the time but often, very often. After blogging about the lifestyle of lifestyle blogging I've been thinking more about my urge to write. Wild things happen in your brain when you write. That is, when you do creative writing, rather than just copying words and sentences. Blogging included, of course. For those who are still wondering if blogging is worth it, I can give a whole bunch of reasons. Reasons such as marketing by blogging. Getting your services an...
Why I don't do to-do lists
I used to think making to-do lists is the way to live, learn and work. It seemed like anyone who was someone was making to-do lists, thus should I too. After years of struggle, lots of undone lists and feeling like a failure, I stopped. Make a search for subjects related to productivity, success and organisation, and you will eventually find an enthusiastic case for to-do lists. To-do lists are everywhere. Bloggers offer printable to-do lists as gifts for subscribing to their emails. There are courses and coaching of using to-do lists better. Your smartphone is filled with apps for making yo...
The lifestyle of lifestyle blogging
When you are starting to blog, all the available advice about how to do it, can be overwhelming. One of the confusing thing is choosing your blog a specialisation, a category where it falls. While you can choose many other categories, lifestyle is a good way to go. In the olden times, when blogging was new and rare, blogs which talked about life, personal events and other similar subjects were referred to as "haircut blogs". The name was derived from the idea that people would blog about getting a haircut and often it was used as a patronising term. As blogging became more mainstream (not...
Don't click!
It was an ad. I looked at it, got interested and wanted to click. But something held me back. What held me back wasn't the fear of being tracked, I'm not that silly. I know I'm already being tracked everywhere I go online. I just didn't want to give in and click an ad. If I did they would win. Whoever "they" are. Someone would profit from my click and someone profiting is horrible, terrible, awful, wrong. In some strange way it is away from me. Doesn't matter if I don't lose anything, my money, my health. I am being robbed. Similarly I resist when I see self promotion on Twitter or Faceboo...
How to make working from home work for you
Most of those articles and tips you read about working from home don't ask the most important question: What works the best for you when you are working from home? Reading all the articles online, working from home can appear like the most difficult task in the world. There are tons of opinions and half-assed studies about how to work more efficiently from home. The more complex the advice is, the better. For example, there's that helpful and often repeated advice about having a separate working space. It tells how working from home you should, must, have to have a separate working space....
Making the users work for the instant fix
After almost two decades of designing and developing web I've found myself having an alarming thought: What if user interfaces must be clumsy, messy and ugly to create more traffic, engagement and conversions? Since the dawn of the times web and app designers have been taught to create simple and easy interfaces. There's a famous book of web design called Don't Make Me Think (by Steve Krug), which idea is that the best interface doesn't require too much thought from its users. The best interface is straightforward and guides a user through fast and with ease. There are many reasons why this...
Branding your blog
Branding, you cannot escape it in this information age. There's business branding, personal branding and, if you are a blogger, now you've got to brand your blog too. Then again, if you do have a blog, it already has a brand. Of a sort at least. A brand is, in most part, the image people have about a product. It is also a promise, which tells what to expect from a product. In this case the product would be your blog and the blog posts. Even if you haven't done any intentional branding your blog and posts still project an image (or several) and your readers still have an image (or several) of...
