What to do when blogging stops working for you?

Many of us bloggers hit that same question at some point: Where to go from here? I have asked it, Nadine asked it recently and maybe you are asking it right now.

We have other responsibilities and if the blog we are currently running isn't bringing the bread to the table it can be difficult to justify spending time on it. Whether your blog is successful or not things can turn stale pretty fast. Something changes (or nothing changes) and it stops feeling right at all.

Did you run out of subjects for new posts? Or did your old subjects just start to feel old and not you in your current situation? Are you unsure if anyone is actually reading your blog posts and thinking about giving up? Been there, all over there, I can relate!

1. Don't be afraid of the change

Refresh when things get stucky. While some of your old readers will scatter the most loyal ones stay. They are those who matter. On the other hand you will lure in new readers.

Instead of letting the blog and expectations drive your writing let your writing drive the blog. Let go of overthinking and the old stuff and go with something new. Try new types of blog posts, new subjects, new ways of writing it.

The change is your friend. Don't be afraid of it.

2. Throw yourself in

In order to create blog posts that will capture you must put yourself in it. This doesn't mean you must always write about yourself. It means you must write from within yourself.

Be personal and be a person. Remember each reader is a person too. Like someone somewhere wrote we are all a bit voyeuristic and therefore we want to get a peek into the real lives of others. Give that peek. Either do it by writing about your personal experiences or writing from your heart and soul.

Love what you write and it shows.

3. Have patience

Sometimes things happen fast but usually they happen slow. I'm talking about things like getting (more) readers or gaining more comments or building a troop of likers on Facebook or making people to find you on Twitter. Most often success comes slow. You may spend days, weeks, months, years writing blog posts and it will seem like nobody reads them.

And then all of a sudden there's a surge of readers, comments from whole new people and someone asking if you would be interested in guest posting on their blog. It just won't happen tomorrow. Nor the day after it. It will happen next year if you keep on doing what you have been doing.

Instead of quitting too early keep it on and things will start to fall in their right places.
