My first website
While checking out some links for my new links page I wandered to Lealea Design blog and Lea Alcantara's entry about her first website (this post isn't available anymore). Yes I do remember mine too, though it was over 10 years ago, so the details are a bit mushy. 1998 I was 17 and I had quite recently found the miracles of Internet, including e-mail, IRC and obviously web. Okay, yes, I had been using some Internet services before, but only occasionally and I'd had my own PC, a little Intel machine with Windows 3.11, since I was 13. Back then having an Internet connection was still a rarity,...
Designer's dilemma
Lets imagine a web designer. She has a website, which includes blog, general info and contact form. The plan is to include a little portfolio too. The web designer is good at her job. She has been creating web sites since she was a teen and that was over 10 years ago. She knows CSS and can do some pretty neat tricks with it. She is a bit of a perfectionist. Mostly about her own work. She wants to feel pride about what she does and doesn't like to leave things half done. \ The web designer designs a new layout for her site. It's artsy and a bit different than her usual designs. There's much...
Run to the hills
I've never been much of an athlete. Actually I've pretty much hated all sorts of sports. Hey, I'm a geek, you know. In school I was the kid who was not good in any sports. As a teen being the smallest of all the girls of my class was pretty scary when it came to playing football (the right kind, not the American) or basketball or anything which had to do with the group of very competitive girls roaming around and trying to score or something. The bigger and more athletic girls just ran over me, not just figuratively speaking. The geek life has taken its toll on my shoulders and back, so a co...
WTF? Social media?
This week schools in Finland have started to get back on with it after the summer break. And to celebrate their last moments of freedom kids have been having parties at leas according the news clips I've noticed. What really caught my eye on the news clips was the final notice that told us the information about these parties was spread through social media. Social media is huge. But what is social media? Facebook, you might say. Or Twitter, if that's your cup of tea. Maybe even blogs or forums. Right? Right? To be honest, the term social media is a bit vague. However there's no o...
Zen
Years ago in my earlier blog I used to take the latest designs on css Zen Garden and review them. I'm not sure when the site has been updated the last time and if there's going to be any new designs on it. However I decided to take the last eight designs and make some quick notes about them. \ A Walk in the Garden is a quite simple and very green design. It's stylish and has that sort of a "hip designer touch" on it. Something like this could work great on a eco or a gardening related site, but as well as a site for some ecological brand. Kyoto Forest is one of the many Japan inspir...
Inception
WARNING: The following includes spoilers about Inception. I don’t recommend to read this post unless you have already seen the movie. It's likely you haven't been able to live without hearing something about Inception, Christopher Nolan's latest work. It's very likely you have heard or read spoilers, minor or bigger ones. It's also likely someone has told you the film is so awesome and someone else has told you it was really confusing. Basically Inception tells a story about Cobb, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio and his crew of extremely smart thieves, who steal ideas and secrets...
About: Twitter
Twitter is probably one of the first examples to come in mind when talking about social media or social networking. Usually Twitter is described as a microblogging service which allows the users to send and read messages, called tweets. In the following I will take a brief look on what Twitter is and how it can be used. The basic idea of Twitter is allowing users to send and read short, 140 characters long messages telling what they are up to or sharing their ideas. Formerly Twitter asked it’s users to answer the question “What are you doing?”, but just last year the question was change...
