Marketing basics: Find the time

This is a new basics of marketing series aimed for small businesses and self employed individuals. Please comment below, share this and tell your businessy friends to join in as well! As a small business (or microbusiness) owner or self employed individual you most likely have to do lots of stuff yourself. Including marketing. Unless you are like me and find marketing really interesting, you will find it a dull and unpleasant thing to do. It's easy to say "I don't have time for this" for such an unpleasant chore. As dull and unpleasant it may seem marketing is something your business ne...

Cure for social media exhaustion

Do you ever get that feeling you want to close all your social media accounts, stop blogging and throw your computer out of the window? Well, maybe I'm exaggerating now. However I'm guessing you unfortunately know that feeling of being tired, bored and frustrated with all the sharing, pinning, plussing and Tweeting. The social media exhaustion. I know that feeling. And I know a cure for it. Or a way out of it, if that sounds more appropriate. I have noticed that each time I get to this point, changing something helps. Be sure to really want the change. Due to all the changes those who have...

The best newsletters make me feel special

I have subscribed to some email newsletters on various blogs. Usually I have been lured to join these lists by some sort of promise by the author. They promise me free e-books or exclusive content. They promise me something special. When I unsubscribe, it's because the emails I receive don't deliver the promise. Yes, I got the e-book or the to do -list, but all the following emails only told me when your blog had been updated. This is what most of these bloggers do with their email campaigns: They use it to inform me when their blog has been updated. I most likely have already liked your p...

Twitter Tuesday: Of profile pictures

You can upload a picture on your profile on Twitter. The picture is shown by each one of your Tweets and of course on your profile page as well. It's part of how your followers identify you and your Tweets, as they skim their Twitter feed. Therefore it's recommended to have a distinct picture and not to change it too often. Headshots are usually the best, some use logos as well. The problem with logos is they don't show personality and people like to follow and communicate with people. I highly recommend to upload a profile picture, if you want to actively use the service. The...

Hot Font #8: FoglihtenNo04

The number 8 Hot Font is very decorative font. So decorative it's almost unreadable. Not quite, but almost. Yet it's so pretty! FoglihtenNo04 is beautiful and complex font. It's basically geometrical and quite clean font with whimsical swirls and lines which result to a controlled chaos. I'd use this in big sizes on posters and such. Created by gluk the font is free and licensed under SIL Open Font License (OFL). FoglihtenNo04 is available on gluk fonts.

Twitter Tuesday: #hashtag #mania

Hashtags are the way to label, sort of categorize, Tweets. They consist of one word (no gaps, apostrophes or other special characters) starting with the hash sign (#). You can search and track hashtags to keep up on Tweets over certain topics. And they are widely overused. At first the hashtags were just something the Twitter users did. It wasn't any sort of a built-in feature of Twitter and back then only third party sites were offering any decent ways to follow and track them. Actually hashtags originate from IRC where they were used to label channels. Soon after they got a quite popular...

Stop doing so much research

Recently I've started to think about something new: I've realized I do too much research and do too little. I get shaky publishing anything if I feel I don't have enough (that means really much) research to back my words up. I mean yeah, that sounds good, but I tend to end up into a situation where I block myself from doing my thing. See it's like I know stuff, but I feel I cannot say I know this stuff unless I have some sort of actual professional research to back it up right now. I have been getting over this and I am getting less shaky the more I blog. But that nagging feeling of doing...
