Impostor
"I feel embarrassed to call myself an artist now." It was a boost to my confidence to read those words. How many times had I said or thought something like that? I had been admiring someone else's detailed drawings or gorgeous paintings and felt like a total fraud. Someone else saying that to me, it was a weird feeling. In the next turn my mind headed back to that same old feeling of embarrassment, feeling like a fraud. Why would anyone feel like that because of me? Is he making fun of me? It's known as impostor phenomenon or impostor syndrome, and it is pretty common. An article p...
How to draw a braid
Drawing hair used to be one of those things I really didn't get. It seemed more like magic how some illustrators were able to create such deep, detailed and real looking hair. I was astonished by the textures, lights and shadows, and how someone could possibly do something like that. Of course I thought it would be difficult and take perhaps days and loads of patience. Then I decided to learn it. After finding out how drawing hair can be fun and easy, I haven't looked back. This isn't the only way to draw hair, there are no rights or wrongs. I just find this method easy and fast. By fast,...
Be advised
Someone somewhere saw my post about how people don't know even their own email addresses. He approached me telling how he doesn't have this problem, and with instructions of ways I could get rid of the problem too. Not really the point of my post, but thanks anyways. He tried to force me a thought that I should not use gmail, nor use firstname.lastname combo. Sort of like if someone keeps sending to my postal address mail intended to another person, and the solution was that I would change my address. I was being advised about how to avoid other people from making mistakes. I didn't ask fo...
Why?
Why do you do what you do? I thought the previous question had been difficult. That had asked for a one-liner about what I do. Being untitled and uncategorised, that was already a tough one to answer. To cramp everything I do, the art, the web design, the branding and marketing, the consulting, the writing, which includes poetry, in one little sentence. That is, without sounding nuts or overly enthusiastic. I had struggled through that one, when the next question was slapped to my face. Why? I took a deep breath and started to wonder why. Why am I here today? Why did I go to study firs...
The /now page
Not that long ago, just in October, I saw people talking on Twitter about something called /now page. It's an idea, prompted by Derek Sivers, to add a simple /now page to your site. A movement of a sort. The idea of a /now page is to list what you are doing, what are your priorities and focuses right now. It works as a reminder and as a declaration for you. I liked the idea from the beginning, and finally created my own /now page. It turned out to be a great exercise. What do I really do, what are my interests and what is, as well as what isn't, important to me. I will keep updating the...
On hearts, favorites, stars and likes
Yesterday Twitter announced they have made a small change to how their platforms and apps (Twitter and Vine) work. They switched the star icon to a heart, and rebranded favorites as likes. People went nuts. Some loved this change. A friend commented they think the little heart is adorable, and there were those who commented that they've been using the button to like the Tweets even before this. But most comments I saw, probably because of the type of people I follow and because the complainers are always the loudest, were negative reactions towards this change. The protests were about ho...
When and how often to post on your Facebook page?
There are many theories on when and how often you should publish posts on a Facebook page in order to bump the reach and visibility of a post. Some will tell you how you should post during weekdays and never after 8 pm. Another will say you should post only 3 to 4 times a week. And they are both quite possibly wrong. First it is very important to note that when and how often to post depends on various things. The foremost issue is when your fans (the people who have liked your page) are on Facebook. This is not necessarily during weekdays and before 8 pm. If your fans are mainly office wor...
