Notes about advertising and boosting posts on Facebook
Lately I've been dabbling with Facebook advertisement from a very small business point of view. I run a website called Stylebook with two other ladies and we do pretty much everything ourselves. Thus I have been making a bunch of homemade test drives with Facebook ads. It's good to note that our advertisement budget is very small (if you are thinking a small number, think smaller now) so I haven't been able to throw lots of money and ads in and see what comes out. Due to this I have been making very refined testing, when it comes to budgets and targeting. I have made a couple of very differe...
Planning not to plan
I really don't like planning. When I hear the words business and plan together I shiver and when I think about putting things on a to do list I get nauseous. What makes planning so awful is that plans are those that never fully come true and they always hang around as things not done. But that's not all. I do prefer spontaneity over making and sticking to list of steps to achieve on objective. Planning, besides of being disappointments more often than satisfactory, is for me a sure way to take anything fun out of things. I don't like planned vacations where you have do things following set t...
The place all the discarded ideas go
Do you ever begin to write a blog post and after a few moments discard the whole thing? This happens to me all the time. I start writing, get down a couple of paragraphs, perhaps wander to some website to find information about the subject or get otherwise distracted and then come back to the text and realise I'm not in the mood for writing any of that. Or what I had begun to write was complete utter bullshit. I also do this with Tweets. That's why you don't see me Tweeting 24/7 about every sneeze and thought I have. Most of my thoughts aren't for public audience. So what I do is I start to...
Are newsletter overlays worth hiding your content?
I was checking my emails and clicked on a link of this newsletter for which I had signed up a while back. The link brought me to the article as intended and then like a slap on my face an overlay with newsletter sign up form appeared. Thanks! I'm already on your stupid newsletter. And now I'm not reading your stupid article, because that stupid overlay slapped me around so hard I forgot what I was doing. I left the site, of course. These newsletter overlays make me mad. The overlays that are timed to pop up a bit later make me go even more bonkers. The overlays, especially those that come ou...
Niche your way to success
I really dislike the word niche. Actually I don't dislike the word itself, but the way it's used these days. Everywhere you turn there's some homemade business person telling how you should find your niche. Without finding your niche you cannot succeed. Without finding your niche you cannot have a blog. Without finding your niche you are nothing. In the beginning of the time making websites was something nerdy types did. It required skill, especially if you wanted to have something as complex as a blog with commenting and whatnot. So back then we were few. Search engines were easy to manipul...
So much more than Visual Web
Web is so much more than just photos or videos. All this talk about Visual Web and how videos are the way to go is so sad. It's sad for it always seem like there's no room for anything but visual and videos. The beauty of web is in the fact that there are so many different ways to communicate with others and express yourself. You are not tied to one way, you don't have to do it with images or videos. You can and may, you can choose to go some other way. When you want to be truly accessible thousand words will trump any photo or a video. There are those of us (not just me, many of us, trust...
How to get my site on top 3 of Google search results
Today a client of a previous web development project sent me a question: How can I get my website on the top 3 of Google search results? I squirmed, hit my head on the wall and went overall dramatic over the question for a while. Since I had just came from a run (in time before the rain it raineth every day) I decided to take a shower before writing my response. The following is my reply to the question with some modifications. Do note that the reply was originally written in Finnish and there's always a huge possibility of lost in translation between such different languages. The respons...
