Cure your writer's block with freestyle, non-judgemental writing

Since being a kid, and beginning to write diaries and my own little stories, I've had this same problem. I start to obsess over "what will others think about this" and then I get stuck with the writing. Yes, even with my diaries I have always used to worry about someone someday reading what I wrote and judge me for it. I have trust issues, obviously, but also I have performance anxiety. I get afraid that my writing isn't good enough. That contributes to my episodes of a terrible writer's block. When you have a writer's block, what is the main reason for it? Is it that you don't have anything...

Writing is scary

When I was a kid I had multiple diaries. Before getting my first computer the diaries were those pretty little books with locks. At some point I usually lost the key of the lock so I had to break in to my own diary. It wasn't very hard though, so not a big problem. When I got my first computer I started to write a diary with it. For all of my diaries I had big plans: I would write about my life every day and it would be as interesting to read as all the real and fictional published diaries I had ever read. And each time I had the same problems. The first problem was that I didn't ever feel lik...

In the comfort zone

You know all that stuff about stepping out of your comfort zone? How it supposedly will make you better and bigger and more successful? I have no problem with sticking in the comfort zone. Doing what suits best and not stressing out with trying something new and exiting. At least not all the time. Thus today I entered, nay leaped, to my comfort zone and results were something that made me very happy. Trees are totally in that comfort zone for me. I like trees. I like taking photos of trees and I find myself pretty okay at drawing them too. Especially birches. Using bold and contrasting colou...

The place all the discarded ideas go

Do you ever begin to write a blog post and after a few moments discard the whole thing? This happens to me all the time. I start writing, get down a couple of paragraphs, perhaps wander to some website to find information about the subject or get otherwise distracted and then come back to the text and realise I'm not in the mood for writing any of that. Or what I had begun to write was complete utter bullshit. I also do this with Tweets. That's why you don't see me Tweeting 24/7 about every sneeze and thought I have. Most of my thoughts aren't for public audience. So what I do is I start to...

Silly hobbies

When I was a kid we used to have these sort of friendship books. A person who owned the book would ask their friends to fill in their names and some details, such as favourite foods or music and such. One of the things to fill in was usually hobbies. I would often write down things like reading, writing, drawing. I never felt quite right about it though. Reading, writing and drawing didn't feel as hobbies, but the usual living person stuff like eating or taking a shower. Hobbies are something I've never been really good with. You know, taking part of hobby related lessons and exercising or k...

Stuck? Get something, anything done!

I have this new project. I cannot tell you about it, but I can tell you right now it seems like a cool thing. And lots of work. The project includes me designing the look for the website. There has been some ideas and hopes for the layout, nothing final. At first I was being very loyal to the first drafts. That wasn't working at all. It looked bad whatever I did. I was so stuck. Then I got an idea. Very different than the original ideas. All of a sudden I was on a roll. The big picture was working and the little details started to find their places. There's a good chance this...

The power of a story

I was waiting for a tram with this guy I've been working with lately. The sun was shining, but since it's autumn the weather was rather nippy. I was shivering and he said I'd need more clothes. "Or more body fat", I answered laconically. He didn't agree and said some people just get easier cold and some keep warm in any weather. I made a remark of how I don't think I've got much blood circulating my extremity and how I always have cold hands. Reminded by this I told a story, which went something like this: A young nurse was working in an hospital where an old and grumpy man had just died....
